National Safety Management Society Recognition Program

GENERAL

The Society's many recognition programs are intended to recognize outstanding accomplishments in safety and in Society service. All applications for recognition for a given year must be submitted to the Director of Recognition Programs by January 15th of the following year.

NSMS FELLOWS

Individuals with at least twenty (20) years of safety experience and broad, significant, long-time achievements and contributions to the safety management profession and the Society are recognized as NSMS Fellows, the Society's highest honor. Candidates may be nominated by any member of the Society.

SAFETY MANAGEMENT PROFESSIONAL OF THE YEAR RECOGNITION

The Society may select one member to be named NSMS Safety Management Professional of the Year for outstanding accomplishments within the safety profession. The recipient of this award will receive three (3) years free dues and an appropriate plaque presented by the International President at a public meeting.

Candidates may be nominated by any member of NSMS. The final decision will be made by the Governing Board. Criteria include demonstrated knowledge and expertise in safety management, Society ser vice, professional contributions, awards and innovations, and leader ship ability.

OUTSTANDING STUDENT RECOGNITION

The Society may honor an outstanding student each year by awarding a $500 scholarship to a deserving and accomplished student preparing for a safety and health career to the appropriate university. For consideration, the student must be carrying at least nine (9) credit hours of safety.

Candidates may be nominated by any NSMS member. The Governing Board will make the final decision if an award will be granted for the year and who the recipient will be.

LONG SERVICE RECOGNITION

NSMS recognizes and expresses appreciation for the loyalty and continuous support of long-time Society members by providing special certificates for those with 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, and 50 years of continuous membership. Members with more than 35 years in NSMS will have their membership paid for Life starting on the day of their 35th anniversary. Certificates will be issued and presented fromthe Society, or sent to chapter presidents for local presentation.

PROFESSIONAL PAPER RECOGNITION

The NSMS Editorial Review Board may select the top three articles published in either Insights Into Management and/or FOCUS. The authors of these three articles will receive a certificate, public acclamation, and a $100 U.S. Savings Bond.

CHAPTER ACHIEVEMENT RECOGNITION PROGRAM

PURPOSE

Motivate chapters toward providing quality service to their members, through recognition of outstanding chapter performance.

NSMS will provide recognition to chapters for superior performance in program development, membership growth and retention, conferences, public relations, recognition and honors, among other criteria. The recognition committee for the year will evaluate chapter' applications based on the criteria listed below.

SCOPE

The Chapter Achievement Recognition Program is designed to recognize those chapters that have provided their members with superior programs designed to foster continued professional growth.

The program provides two main categories of activity, plus a list of requirements. Chapter may be recognized for meeting all of the requirements and excelling in the "Categories of Achievement."

CRITERIA

The Governing Board will evaluate all chapters making application for recognition, using the following criteria listed below.

REQUIREMENTS

  1. Officers and Elections - Elect a President, Vice President or President-Elect, Secretary, and Treasurer. (Secretary/Treasurer position may be combined in one person.) Elections must be conducted in compliance with chapter bylaws, and the results sent to the Society Business Office within thirty (30) days of the elections.
  2. Chapter Meetings - There must be at least five (5) general membership meetings and/or conferences each year. Committee meetings do not count toward achieving this requirement.
  3. Membership Roster - Should be updated annually and made avail able to the chapter members.
  4. Financial Reports - Submitted to the Society Business Office at least annually.
  5. Newsletters - Publication at least three (3) times during the year.
  6. Year-end Reports - Shall be submitted to the Society Business Office within sixty (60) days of the close of the chapter year. Copies of all Chapter Executive Committee meeting minutes shall be sent to the Society Business Office.
  7. Bylaws sent to the Society Business Office and are updated annually or as needed.
  8. Chapter has an active membership campaign to get new and maintain current members.

CATEGORIES OF ACHIEVEMENT

In addition to meeting the basic eight requirements, a chapter must excel in one or more of the following categories.

  1. Monthly programs
  2. Seminars/Conferences
  3. Academic Liaison
  4. Newsletters
  5. Membership Development
  6. Local College or University Program Coordination
  7. Other (list and describe)

RECOGNITION DEADLINES

  1. By January 15 of each year the Director of NSMS Recognition Programs will provide the NSMS President with the name of three people who are willing to participate in the recognition se lection process for the year.
  2. The committee must have a review of all chapters and their deci sion of top three chapters to the President by March 1.
  3. The President will instruct the Business Manager to notify the winning chapters immediately following the next scheduled Governing Board meeting after March 1.

RECOGNITION

Those chapters honored will receive the following recognition:

  1. 1. Letter of recognition from the NSMS President
  2. 2. Mounted certificate
  3. 3. Publication of the chapter's superior achievement in the NSMS newsletter
  4. 4. Special announcement/recognition at the NSMS annual meeting

Information submitted should be based on activities in previous year ending December 31

JUDGING CRITERIA (For use by Recognition Review Committee)

  1. Programs (Consider unique presentations, use of audio-visual, qua1ifications of speaker, percent attendance of total membership, advance notices/announcements, joint meetings with other societies, timeliness/relevance of Issues or subjects discussed, etc.)
  2. Seminars/Conferences (Consider same factors as above, plus CEUs offered, participation in regional seminars, etc. Chapter shall hold at least two of these per year to qualify.)
  3. Academic Liaison (Consider curriculum advisory groups assistance with new degree programs, chapter members instructing at ac credited colleges, work with student sections, liaison with recog nized engineering or safety/health organization, etc. Consider quantity and scope of activities as well as quality.) (This does not include the work done by full-time professors or instructors.)
  4. Newsletter (Consider quality level of format and design, photos, editorials, inclusion of international NSMS as well as local news and activities, guest articles, management materials, adequacy and timeliness of announcements about chapter activities, etc.)
  5. Membership Development (What has chapter done to attract qualified applicants and serve potential members? What is the ac tual member total and the potential? What kind of member devel opment campaigns are there? What is their recent member growth trend? What recognitions are there for new members? Incentives?)
  6. Public Relations (Evaluate meeting notices in local newspaper and radio-television stations, guest appearances on radio and TV, ma terial placed in periodicals, participation in local safety conferences or public affairs events, amount of material sent to local media about chapter activities and its quality, etc.)
  7. Community Involvement (Participation in local service clubs, schools, Chamber of Commerce, Junior Achievement, bicycle safety campaigns, traffic safety activities, fire prevention, etc.)

In addition to meeting the eight requirements, a chapter must show outstanding performance in at least one of the following areas during the previous Society year.

  1. Monthly Programs
  2. Seminars/Conferences
  3. Academic Liaison
  4. Newsletters
  5. Membership Development
  6. Public Relations
  7. Community Involvement
  8. Other (list and describe)

This chapter recognition program is not intended nor should it pro mote chapter competition. Each chapter should be measured against themselves on how effectively they use the resources available to them to achieve their potential.

SAFETY MANAGEMENT PROFESSIONAL OF THE YEAR RECOGNITION PROGRAM ADMINISTRATIVE GUIDELINES

PURPOSE:

To achieve public awareness and recognition for the National Safe ty Management Society members who have exemplified outstanding activity and achievement in the Safety Management field. This award will be presented by the Governing Board and may also be given by each chapter to a chapter Outstanding Safety Management Professional of the Year.

ELIGIBIUTY

To be eligible for the NSMS Safety Management Professional of the Year recognition, the nominee must:

  1. Be a member of the Society
  2. Be engaged in employment in the broad profession of occupational safety and health management.
  3. Not have received the award Within the past five (5) years.

GENERAL CRITERIA

This award is based on the nominee's immediate past three (3) year's activities only. Prior activities or accomplishments will not be considered by the recognition committee and should not be included in the petition (recommendation). As the name of the award implies, the focus of this recognition is on current activities, not long past accomplishments.

The specific Safety Management responsibilities of safety professionals are dependent upon many factors and vary widely from one position or one organization to another; however, the broad area for consideration for selecting the recipient of the award must include, but is not necessarily limited to the following:

  1. 1. Demonstrated expertise in the broad occupational safety/health field, indicating through knowledge of the operation aspect of their job.
  2. 2. Special or outstanding contributions to the advancement of NSMS objectives, services to members, lecturer or speaker at Society or other seminars, committee/project chairman, etc.
  3. 3. Professional contributions to advance the safety management profession, such as advancement of the profession as a management process, fostering professional development of members, public services (including community activities), lecturer or instructor at educational institutions, involvement in codes and legislation, work with allied groups, etc.
  4. 4. Awards and innovations, including all honors received for safety activities, plus inventions, new ideas, systems and philosophies developed.
  5. 5. The "professional" who deserves to be recognized as a leader and pacesetter will have established, significantly maintained, or im proved safety management systems within the organization he/ she serves and elsewhere.
  6. 6. Other personal accomplishments in safety and health not classifiable.
  7. 7. Endorsements of superiors and associates, in the form of letters on appropriate stationery from employer or other source.

NOMINATION PROCEDURES

  1. The person nominated for the NSMS Safety Management Professional of the Year Award must be a member in good standing.
  2. The Recognition Review Committee will review petitions and request additional information as needed.
  3. Final decision for each category of recognition will be made by the Governing Board.

A strong public relations effort should be made for all recognition presentations such as:

  1. Inform the recipient's manager of the recognition the Society in tends to bestow on the individual.
  2. Contact the recipient's hometown newspaper editor and submit a prepared article with picture.
